Scar Reduction

Scars are an abnormal healing response of the skin to injury. There are three main types of scars: atrophic scars, hypertrophic scars, and keloids. While atrophic scars are skin depressions, hypertrophic and keloid scars are elevated or raised.

How can scars be treated?

Scars that are thick and elevated can be treated with cortisone injections to make them flat. Fractionated resurfacing can be done to smooth them out, but sometimes a combination approach is required. Red scars can be treated with lasers. And dermal fillers, such as Radiesse® or hyaluronic acid, can be used to elevate indented, soft scars. Improvement is immediate, but not permanent. Injections typically need to be repeated every 3 to 6 months. Please do not wait too long to treating a scar since fresh scars respond best to lasers, creams and injections.
